10 Things you didn't know about the Nintendo Game Boy!
Nintendo's Game Boy handheld was first released in 1989. The gaming device was the brainchild of long-time Nintendo employee Gunpei Yokoi. The original Game Boy, launched in 1989 for a mere $89.99, would only cost $170.00 today (inflation rate).
The Nintendo Game Boy was loved by so many, as well as being such an icon in many childhood memories. Just because we love Nintendo so much we thought we would put together a list of 10 fun things you might not of known about the Game Boy.
10. The Game Boy was the first gaming system in space!
In 1993, Soviet cosmonaut Aleksandr A. Serebrov took his Game Boy to space on his TM-17 space mission. The Game Boy was light weight which meant it was ideal for this Space Traveler to take with him. If you're wondering Aleksandr was only allowed to take one game, which he choose Tetris.
9. Sold out 300,000 units in Japan on first release!
The Game Boy launched in Japan on 21 April, 1989, at the price of 12,500 yen and immediately sold out of its initial run of 300,000 units. It was later launched in other countries late 1989 to 1990.
8. Battery life was not a problem but low lighting areas was!
The first game boy could run for 30 hours on two AA batteries, this was due to the screen having only 4 shades of gray and having no backlight. So the moment light started becoming an issue you either had to turn on a light or have your light adaptor ready.
7.Breaking the mould!
Nintendo announced, in 1995, that 46% of Game Boy’s gamers were female, the first time a console was so popular with women. And in 2014 a study found 52% of gamers are female.
6. Making it easier to play!
The controller for the Game Boy was set up the same as Nintendo's Entertainment System which made it popular with gamers. The Game Boy was designed with four buttons and an eight-way D-pad controller. The four buttons included Start, Select, and A, and B.
5. Nintendo Game Boy nearly bomb proof?
There is a Game Boy in display in New York Nintendo World Store that survived a Gulf War bombing. It still has a perfect picture despite being mangled in the bombing.
4. Nintendo Game Boy out sells the competition!
The Game Boy and Game Boy Color sold more than the Atari Lynx and Sega Genesis combined with 118.69 million units before being discontinued in 2000.
3. The Game Boy launches Pokémon and other titles into stardom!
Pokemon became a main game on Game Boy that ultimately went on to be so widely popular it took on a life of its own. The Game Boy became a popular option for playing fantasy role-playing games such as Legend of Zelda which sparked a huge fanbase leading them to be played into the consoles throughout the years.
2. The Game Boy basically invented the selfie on a handheld device!
The selfie was basically invented through the Game Boy. The Game Boy could have an accessory which was a digital camera with a thermal printer, this was released in 1998, making it possible for players to take pictures of themselves and print them.
1. The Game Boy wasn't the first hand held gaming device invented!
The Game Boy was not the first hand held system that Nintendo released. The company also released Game and Watch in 1980. And before that was in 1979 the LCD-based Microvision, designed by Smith Engineering and distributed by Milton-Bradley, became the first handheld game console and the first to use interchangeable game cartridges.
